2017 AAU Eligibility Rules
In the fall of 2014, the AAU National Committee changed the eligibility rules for boys basketball in Grades 1 through 8. The new rules base player eligibility strictly on age, rather than grade and age. Each AAU division will be labeled 7U, 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, and 14U. Participants in each age division can be no older than the denoted age on August 31st of that year - in this case 2017. For example, a 5th grade AAU team (11U) can only pick players who are no older than 11 years old on August 31, 2017. Thus, any player with a birthday before that date has to try out for the 6th grade team (12U) even though he is in 5th grade. These new rules were adopted to remedy the much-abused reclassification phenomenon sweeping Division 1 AAU, but it will definitely affect most of our local AAU teams that are not a part of the problem. If a team wishes to participate in an AAU-sanctioned tournament, such as the Potomac Valley AAU Regionals, AAU Super Regionals and AAU Nationals, that team must follow these new eligibility rules. There are a number of tournaments in our area that do not require AAU eligibility in order to participate.
In our CYA Boys AAU Program, each head coach will decide whether his team will enter AAU-sanctioned tournaments and therefore, follow the new rules. A coach may choose to exclusively enter tournaments that do not require AAU eligibility and pick his players accordingly. Each team’s webpage will indicate whether it intends to follow the AAU eligibility requirements.
If you have any questions regarding your son’s eligibility to play on a certain team, please contact the head coach or
, Boys AAU Coordinator.
